Crafting a website that performs for the Theatre Royal Sydney
Scope
Website design (UX, UI)
The brief
Theatre Royal Sydney delivers unforgettable performances. Its digital experience needed to match.
The team came to us with a clear challenge: their existing website no longer reflected the calibre of their productions, and it was holding both their patrons and their internal team back.

The challenge
Three friction points were getting in the way of a site that could truly perform:
Limited internal control: Content updates required going back to a third-party provider, slowing down the team and creating unnecessary dependency for changes that should have been simple.
A restricted patron experience: The old site structure made it difficult to cater to the range of ways patrons want to engage, whether that is browsing by show, finding accessible performances, or booking quickly without friction.
Underutilised integrations: Features like the Nearby Dining section had genuine potential to benefit patrons and high-value partners alike, but the existing design and functionality could not support it.
Our process
We approached this as both a design solution and an operational optimisation, mapping how patrons move through the site and how the internal team manages it day-to-day. Every decision had to work for both.
User journey mapping
We began by mapping the full range of patron types and their goals, from the quick booker who knows exactly what they want, to the browser exploring upcoming shows, to the patron with specific accessibility needs. Understanding these distinct journeys shaped every structural and design decision that followed.
User interface and experience design
With the journeys defined, we designed a site architecture and visual language that reflects the theatre's artistic excellence while remaining genuinely intuitive to navigate. The design system was built to flex, giving the internal team multiple templates and ready-made visual layouts that they could use confidently to update content without any limitations or needing to start from scratch each time.
Website development
We built the site on Elementor, giving the TRS team a CMS with pre-built visual layouts and a level of control that simply was not possible before. The build also included a tighter integration between the site and the ticketing platform, and a fully responsive experience across all devices and browsers.
Our solution
We transformed the Theatre Royal Sydney website into a dynamic brand touchpoint: one that accurately reflects the theatre's artistic excellence and works just as well behind the scenes as it does in front of them.
Optimised patron journeys: Whether patrons want to book quickly, browse by show or date, learn about the theatre's history, or find an accessible performance, they can now do it quickly and intuitively.
Fully responsive design: Just as every patron deserves a great view regardless of their seat, every user receives a seamless, modern experience across all devices and browsers.
Stronger integrations: A streamlined connection between the site and the ticketing platform reduces drop-off in the booking journey, while the Nearby Dining section has been rebuilt into a genuine asset for patrons and high-value partners.
Frictionless content management: The internal team can now make fast, confident content updates using pre-built templates and visual layouts, without relying on external input or starting from a blank canvas.

The result
The new Theatre Royal Sydney website delivers on two fronts that matter most: the experience patrons have, and the experience the team behind it has every day.
For patrons, the site now works the way a world-class venue should, meeting people where they are and guiding them through to booking with far less friction. For the internal team, they now have genuine control of the backend interface – replacing a slow, dependent process with one that is fast, flexible and entirely their own.
